Industrial maintenance teams move between inspection, lubrication, parts handling, coatings, cleanup and repairs. A disposable nitrile glove can support contamination control and selected routine contact, but it is only one tool in a broader hand-protection program.
Quick answer: Build a task-to-glove matrix from the employer’s hazard assessment. Use disposable nitrile only where the exact product is suitable; define change points between dirty and clean assets; and route cuts, punctures, heat, electrical work, severe abrasion and chemical immersion to the protection selected for those hazards.
Start with the work order, not the mil number

Create clean-to-dirty boundaries
Change gloves before touching shared controls, finished parts, calibration tools, inspection instruments and documentation stations. Also change after waste handling, leaks, visible contamination, tears and any work-order transition that introduces a different substance. A written boundary prevents a “still looks usable” pair from carrying residue through the facility.
Use thickness as a trial variable
- 6 mil: broad professional-use comparison for inspection, assembly and routine maintenance.
- 7 mil: a more substantial feel for longer routine tasks.
- 8/10 mil textured family: heavy-duty grip and durability comparison for selected non-cut, non-thermal work.
Evaluate tears, donning failures, grip, dexterity, pairs per work order and worker feedback. Do not use thickness alone to claim cut, puncture or chemical resistance.
Keep the hazard-assessment boundary visible
OSHA requires hand-protection selection to consider the task, conditions, duration and identified hazards. That means a site may need several glove classes: disposable nitrile for selected routine work, chemical-resistant gloves for documented chemical exposure, cut-resistant gloves for sharp edges, and other specialized protection for heat, electricity or impact.
Build a maintainable supply program
- List recurring work orders and substances.
- Attach the current label, SDS and approval record to each chemical task.
- Define the authorized glove class and exact product for each task.
- Stock all sizes near clean entry points, away from chemicals and splash.
- Measure actual use and failure by work-order family.
- Review the matrix after chemical, equipment or process changes.
